Chapter Six

BETH CHECKED HER WATCH. It was almost midnight, and she had to meet Hector. She took a deep breath and stepped out of Angela’s personal car she’d loaned her, glancing around the deserted parking lot.

Hector stood next to a black van, a group of men around him. As she approached, Hector turned to her, a smirk on his face. “I see you made it,” he said, gesturing to the van. “We’re going to need you to drive this to a location about an hour away. There will be someone waiting for you there, and they’ll take it from there.”

Beth nodded, trying to appear confident. Her palms were sweating, but she had to go through with this to gain Hector’s trust.

As she got into the driver’s seat, Hector leaned in close to her. “Remember, if anything goes wrong, we’ll find you.”

Beth swallowed hard, but she had to focus. She started the van and drove off into the night, barely holding back a shriek when she glanced in the rearview mirror and found two men watching her intently.

The drive was nerve-wracking, with every car that passed making her heart race. She could feel the gazes of the men in the back of the van, and she was being watched closely.

Finally, she arrived at the designated location, a deserted warehouse on the outskirts of Castle Rock. As she parked the van, a man emerged from the shadows, his face obscured by a hood. “Hand over the keys,” he said, holding out his hand. Her two passengers opened the back door and exited that way.

Beth hesitated for a moment, her instincts telling her something was off. But she couldn’t afford to lose Hector’s trust.

The man took the keys from Beth and gestured for her to follow him inside the warehouse. As they entered, she saw rows of crates and boxes, and the smell of stale cigarette smoke hung in the air.

He led her through a maze of corridors and finally into a large room with rows of bunk beds. It looked like a dormitory, but the windows were covered with black garbage bags, blocking out any light.

Beth saw the silhouettes of girls huddled in the beds, and her heart ached for them. “What is this place?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man turned to her, his eyes cold. “This is where we keep our merchandise. Hector wants you to be a procurer.”

Beth furrowed her brows, not fully understanding what the man meant. “What do you mean, a procurer?” she asked.

The man let out a humorless chuckle. “You’ll be in charge of bringing in new girls for us. The vulnerable ones. The ones who won’t be missed. We recently had too much turnover in the positions, so we need new talent.”

Beth’s stomach turned as she realized what he was implying. “I won’t do that,” she said firmly.

The man’s expression turned cold. “You don’t have a choice. If you want to work with us, you’ll do what Hector asks. Otherwise, you’re no use to us.
